De zoals steeds onovertroffen G. K. Chesterton merkte op dat de kritiek op het katholieke geloof zo merkwaardig is omdat ze zo tegenstrijdig is. Voor de enen is het storend dat de mens zo hoog wordt verheven boven alle schepselen, voor de anderen schandalig dat de mens zo diep wordt vernederd tegenover God. Volgens de enen wordt het huwelijk en het krijgen van kinderen te hoog de hemel in geprezen, volgens anderen is het celibaat onbegrijpelijk en onnatuurlijk. Dat komt, stelt Chesterton vast in zijn Orthodoxie, omdat de Kerk een subtiel evenwicht in stand houdt dat die schijnbare tegenstellingen omvat én overstijgt. De recente discussies over de politieke ‘recuperatie’ van het Christendom door Europees rechts (zie Tertio nr. 1028 van 23/10) doen daar sterk aan denken.
